Cleaning Cowhide Rugs

While they are a super-durable and very stylish rug, genuine cowhide rugs need to be cared for the same way you would any other home accessory.

Taking care of your cowhide rug is necessary to prolong its life and keep it clean, avoiding dust particles and dirt and other debris that will be introduced into your home. The method of cleaning cowhide rugs is not that different as with other types of rugs.

Cowhide rugs are very durable and will last a long time. In general, it requires minimal cleaning. Some homeowners simply shake out the cowhide rug to remove the dust. You may use a soft-bristle brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and gently vacuum, going with the grain of hair. In other words, do not push the hairs up when vacuuming. This process may be time consuming, but it will collect any settled dust without picking up the rug each time.

Rotate your rug or move to a different location from time to time so that it wears evenly. Protect from direct sunlight and avoid sharp objects and excessive heat.

If using a damp cloth, wipe with the hair and not against it. You can wipe smoothly in the direction of the hair with a damp (but not wet) cloth with mild soap and water.

For common spills like wine, coffee, tea, juice, food, soup etc - soak up spills with a paper towel or sponge immediately. Wipe with a damp (but not wet) sponge or cloth using mild soapy solution. Finally clean with a damp cloth. Alternatively to clean spills or extra dirty areas, use a very small amount of mild shampoo on a damp sponge. Sponge along the nap repeatedly. Rinse the sponge to remove the shampoo and dirt and repeat until the hide is cleaned. Dry using a towel running along the nap.

The five tips you don't do with a cowhide rug

Do not soak the hide or get it wet.

Do not wash in a washing machine or any machine cleaning process.

Do not use saddle soaps.

Do not use leather creams and avoid vigorous rubbing.

Do not place a cowhide rug in a damp or wet environment. If you have a dehumidifier, use it regularly to remove moisture from the room.
